    Exciting news for young writers! An independent publisher is interested in publishing (real small press publishing, not self-publishing) an anthology of stories and short pieces by our young Athena’s authors. Prof. Valerie and Prof. Suki are joining forces to walk you through the entire publishing process, from writing to publication.

    This book, if we can finish it, will be properly on sale and go on everyone’s resumes and portfolios. As such, we’re setting up a class where we create it–especially suited for our writing students, but all are welcome!

    Students enrolled in the class will help build the anthology from the ground up, working on their own submission as well as helping to guide the formation of the book and supporting other writers. Many forms of writing (and other expression) are welcome.

    Note to Parents:

    • Students who commit to this process agree that they will produce a short story (or possibly poem or nonfiction), revised and edited, by the due date. If they cannot finish their project, fees will not be refunded. The instructors will make every effort to support the students in the process of writing and editing their submission. The due date is expected to be shortly after the end of the semester; however, we may postpone the date to spring depending on the needs of the publisher.
    • The class will use Google Docs to work collaboratively. Students must be able to use a Google login, either their own or a parent’s.

    What to expect in the Required section in the classroom each week:

    • Write an excellent, polished short piece, with revisions and guidance from instructors

    What to expect in the Highly Suggested & Optional sections in the classroom each week:

    • Learn about the publishing process, from writing to revision to submission and copy editing.

    What to expect during the webinars:

    • Drop-in webinars are 50 minutes long. Webinars are recorded and are available for students with schedule conflicts.
    • The instructors will use the time to help students learn the craft and develop supportive critical skills.

    Before taking this course, students should be able to: 

    • Read at a solid 5th-grade level or above.
    • Write paragraphs independently at a solid 5th grade level

    Students should be willing to:

    • Be prepared for the webinar.
    • Actively participate (via the microphone and chat) in the class discussion.
    • Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ stories if invited.

    Required books & materials:

    • None
    • Good books or other readings of students’ choice are encouraged.
