    In this class, students will learn the science behind the buzzwords in current scientific and national news. We will learn all about topics ranging from cloning, GMOs, renewable energy and even the science behind the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Students will learn the scientific background of these topics, and will read about them in current news articles.

    This class focuses on scientific literacy and developing the student’s knowledge so they can have in-depth and informed discussions of interesting and newsworthy science topics.

    Note to Parents:

    • Students in Middle School that have taken Biology 101 will also be well prepared for the class.

    What to expect in the Required section in the classroom each week:

    • Required reading each week will include background information for each topic as well as news articles discussing the topic.
    • Discussion questions, thought provoking ethical questions, and innovative questions relating to the topic will be included each week.

    What to expect in the Highly Suggested & Optional sections in the classroom each week:

    • Curated resources, including websites & videos, are provided to excite learners and to add depth to the subject matter.

    What to expect during the weekly webinar:

    • Weekly webinars are 50 minutes long. Webinars are recorded and are available for students with schedule conflicts.
    • This course is discussion based. Background material will be presented and students are encouraged to ask questions on the material as it is presented.
    • Since this is a current events class, students are encouraged to share their thoughts, experiences and prior knowledge on presented topics

    Before taking this course, students should be able to: 

    • Have completed Biology 101 or a similar course.
    • Read at a solid seventh grade level and be comfortable reading and understanding news articles.
    • Write a concise paragraph independently.

    Students should be willing to:

    • Be prepared for the webinar.
    • Actively participate (via the microphone and chat) in the class discussion.
    • Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ posts in the classroom forums.
