What is design? It is creative problem solving seen all around us! It has real-world functions and constraints — it plays a part in everything we do.
This course will introduce you to the world of design. You’ll start looking at the world around you with a more critical eye to context, sustainability, and usability. Each class presents design in context ~ a design element like composition, style, or type of design.
In class, we will explore many types of design including architecture, spatial design, product design, and communication / graphic design.
Design is about doing! So, we will begin with a small project, build on it, and refine it, while learning about various aspects of design along the way.
Note to parents:
- We will talk about design tools, but we will only introduce the most basic ones as software can be expensive.
“I think design is often misrepresented as art. Design has uses, users, context. I am a graphic designer (trained as an architect) who is very passionate about designing for people in particular cultural and environmental context which means I subscribe to the philosophy of ‘Form follows Function’. By helping students think about the design all around us, I can give students a sense of how things are used, materials they are made of, structural strength of materials and shapes, history, and, of course, visual appreciation.” ~ “Prof.” Aparna
