As a follow-up to our Design in Our Everyday Lives, Big and Small course, this course will focus on one design project in a charrette-style class where participants discuss various aspects of student design. This is how true design studios work!
The class will focus on natural design: designed structures in nature. We will look at nests, shells, dams, and other habitats created by creatures and see what makes them work in terms of form, materials, and structure. Students will then use these as inspiration to pursue one project throughout the course.
This 8-week course will have the students go through each step of a project. Design is a thoughtful, iterative process and this is what the kids will explore while bringing their ideas to life. Expect homework, but fun work!
This class is for students who love design and are willing to explore it further. Let’s explore the process of design and the world of ideas!
Note to parents:
- Ultimately, design is about doing. Students will design at home and discuss during the class. Students will present their work, catalog feedback, and decide the next steps in design refinement. They will also get to comment and ask questions about other students’ works.
- Quality of the class will depend on student interaction and student participation in presentations.
- We will talk about design tools and process but not get into software skills.
