A special High School-level version of this popular class for those students wishing to proceed towards Advanced Placement® English Language.
When was the last time you were called upon to convince another that your opinion was valid? Did you succeed? What would you do differently the next time?
Expressing an opinion is something we do everyday in a variety of formats for reasons that range from vital to convenient. Success depends on method, approach, and structure. In this class, we’ll study the tenets of rhetoric and practical strategies. Then we’ll engage in a formal debate to put your new skills into action!
Note to parents:
- This class will study formal rhetoric and debate techniques. We will not necessarily be covering current events, but, while everyone argues their own opinions most skillfully, the class will ask students to step outside their comfort zone. Students must be prepared to be assigned a topic and/or side with which they may not agree. The focus is on how to craft and perform a formal rhetorical argument in a debate format.
- Class size will be small. When enrollment is filled, you will be placed on the waitlist for an additional section to be held during the second 8-weeks of the semester.
