Description

Do you think you know everything there is to know about marine biology? What else could there be to know? You’ve covered invertebrates, algae, and ecosystems…what more could there be?

Prof. Emma has good news for you! There’s always more to learn about marine biology!

In this year-long course, we will explore marine biology topics in greater depth. Students who have been in Prof. Emma’s courses before may recognize some of the topics covered–but during this class we will investigate them in greater detail.

Topics will include:

  • Marine Invertebrate Phyla
  • Marine Flowering Plants
  • r- and K-selection
  • Life Cycles of Marine Organisms
  • Settlement & Recruitment
  • Unusual Species
  • And much, much more!

Students will complete virtual labs and read scientific papers to deepen their understanding of the material.

This is a high school level course based on college-level material. Students should be prepared to think deeply and complete high-level assignments.

What to Expect

What to expect in the classroom each week:

  • A forum to help improve student understanding and knowledge about the week’s material.
  • A laboratory activity or other activity plus a laboratory report–or a scientific paper reading assignment.
  • A short quiz to assess student understanding.

What to expect during the webinars:

  • Webinars are 50 minutes long and are recorded and are available for students with schedule conflicts.
  • Primary instruction and guided discussions are provided during live webinars.
  • Active Participation (via the microphone and chat) in online class discussions.
  • An activity at the end of the webinar.

Materials & More

Before taking this course, students should be able to:

  • Write at a high school level or above.
  • Write several paragraphs independently.
  • Read a scientific article (with guidance from the instructor).

Students should be willing to:

  • Actively participate (via the microphone) in the class discussion.
  • Encourage class discussion by adding their questions/ideas in the chat window during the webinar.
  • Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ posts in the classroom forums.

Required books & materials:

  • There are no required books and materials for this course—readings will be taken from the Internet.
