It’s October 79 AD and Mount Vesuvius has erupted, burying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Thankfully, we are far enough away that we weren’t buried in ash, but we have been experiencing some pretty bad air quality!
We are the (somewhat anachronistic) newspaper and editorial staff of one of the neighboring cities (the students will decide or make it up!). Our city consists primarily of Latin speakers but there has been a growing Greek population in recent years. We are pleased that our newspaper caters to speakers of both languages!
In this class, we will be writing a (short) newspaper. Like a regular newspaper, we will have all sorts of sections to our newspaper, including main stories, interest pieces, a marketplace, obituaries, the weather, etc. Students will be practicing (and expanding!) their knowledge of Latin and/or Greek vocabulary, grammar, and prose writing skills while working with other students to produce various pieces for the newspaper. Students will also engage in peer editing to verify that we have an error-free publication! (Or maybe we’ll need an errata section, too!)
This is a language retention class open to Latin and Greek students of all levels. As a result, there will be no new grammar material in this class.
Notes to parents:
- While most of the work for this class will be done during the weekly webinar and through forums in the classroom, some groups may find that they would like to communicate with each other to work on their pieces outside of the Athena’s platform. When I am informed of this desire, I will connect parents first so that parents can determine the most appropriate way for their students to work with other students outside of Athena’s.
