Metaphors and Molecules – Poetry Meets Science
$167.00
NEW Course! “We especially need imagination in science. It is not all mathematics, nor all logic, but it is somewhat beauty and poetry,” –Maria Mitchell
“Science and poetry are, in fact, inseparable. By providing a vision of life, of Earth, of the universe in all its splendor, science does not challenge human values; it can inspire human values.” –Jacques Cousteau
“Scientists and poets alike use their powers of observation, inquiry, and creativity. In this new course, science and poetry collide, combine, and energize each other! We will consider writings of scientists as well as poets, and create original pieces of poetry inspired by our knowledge–and questions–from various fields of science. Curious? Join me to investigate!” ~Prof. Lisa

Welcome, young science enthusiasts AND writers! This collaborative, low-pressure course is designed to demonstrate that poetry is for everyone. Just like scientists, poets rely on curiosity, observation, and experimentation–and poets find a wealth of inspiration in the world around us, from the deep ocean to deep space.
In this class, we will examine what “makes” poetry as we survey a broad range of published work. Students will expand their knowledge and appreciation of poetry, gain the vocabulary to notice and discuss features of the poems we consider, and apply this understanding as they follow their own inspirations.
Each week, we will generate new work inspired by readings and by students’ varied interests. Students will begin pieces of writing during our webinars, then apply the techniques we explore to develop their work and share in an ongoing classroom forum.
Students may work at their own pace, with additional resources available for those who would like to dive deeper. If students choose, they may also develop and present a project connected to a specific scientific interest or topic.
This course is appropriate for writers of all levels of experience- the only prerequisite is curiosity! Students should be willing to share some of their writing and respond to classmates’ work with positive and thoughtful comments.
Note to Parents:
- This course is a fast-paced, interactive writing environment. Students with special learning needs may need parental assistance.
