We have all read these words and heard them on the news, but what do they really mean? How do these topics affect us and the living world around us?
In Scientific Literacy: Current Topics in Biology, we will go beyond the headlines and begin to understand currents topics surrounding the field of Biology.
Students will read journal articles and news stories which cover how biology is being applied in the fields of medicine, technology, and environmental studies. Class time will be spent discussing the readings, the application of biology that was presented in the articles, as well as the societal impact and ethics of topics. The class will promote scientific literacy and show real life applications of topics learned in Biology 101.
Class Extension: This class will run for eight weeks. After the eight weeks of webinars, the classroom will remain open. The open classroom will be updated with interesting articles and news items. There will also be an ongoing discussion and question thread in the classroom after the eight webinars.
