The history of our world is a rich tapestry woven by unbelievable human endeavors, cultures that rise to power then fade away, humankind’s hunger for exploration and discovery, and natural disasters that have influenced and shaped our destiny.
There is a lot of ground to cover!
This is the first in our series of history courses. We use the Story of the World books, by the award winning author Susan Wise Bauer, to ignite a passion for exploring the centuries of human existence and finding out how this influenced the world we live in today.
In our live webinars we dig deeply into the historical events of the period and discuss the artifacts, people, customs and cultures that were “of that time.” Using primary sources, critical thinking, and interactive web tools, students will travel back in time and later apply what they have learned to their future.
Note to parents:
- The Story of the World – Volume 2: The Middle Ages follows this course in the same time slot in the spring.
- The Story of the World series follows in progression in the same time slot over a two-year period:
- Story of the World 1: Fall Semester
- Story of the World 2: Spring Semester
- Story of the World 3: Fall Semester
- Story of the World 4: Spring Semester
- The Story of the World courses may be taken in any order.
- The Story of the World course is presented from a secular standpoint. We only discuss religion as it relates to history (e.g. how leaders, like the pharaohs, will use it to solidify their positions). The Story of the World series has often been described as “religious-neutral,” meaning fair conversation is given to multiple religions. The Story of the World uses ancient texts (or stories) which are often religious in nature since most ancient texts are connected to a religion. The book uses these stories to convey what was happening in the past. Included in SOTW 1 you will find quotes and stories from many religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucius’s ideas, the Assyrian religion, Native American beliefs, Greek & Roman mythologies, etc. In our class, we only discuss these religions as they relate to history (e.g. how leaders, like the pharaohs, will use it to solidify their positions). - Students enrolled in this course and are interested in working on a group project are welcome to sign up for Dr. Kirsten’s supplementary Group Project asynchronous course.
What to expect in the Required section in the classroom each week:
- Read 2-3 chapters in our history text.
- Respond to 1-2 forum prompts — writing at least one five-sentence paragraph for each.
- Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ posts in the classroom forums.
What to expect in the Highly Suggested & Optional sections in the classroom each week:
- Curated resources, including websites & videos, are provided to excite learners and to add depth to the subject matter.
- We feature frequent projects and Minecraft™ activities for collaborative or solo expression.
What to expect during the weekly webinar:
- Weekly webinars are 50 minutes long. Webinars are recorded and are available for students with schedule conflicts.
- Primary instruction and guided discussions are provided during live webinars.
- Active Participation (via the microphone and chat) in online class discussions.
Before taking this course, students should be able to:
- Read at a 5th-grade level or above.
- Write a paragraph independently, or with parental assistance.
Students should be willing to:
- Actively participate (via the microphone) in the class discussion.
- Encourage class discussion by adding their questions/ideas in the chat window during the webinar.
- Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ posts in the classroom forums.
