“Creative writing is easy, but essays are a headache.” Wrong! But they do require different ways of thinking and planning–which can benefit creative writing, too. With knowledge and practice, students become well-rounded writers who are ready to express their ideas in writing for any purpose. ~Prof. Lisa

I love to teach writing in a group classroom and to see students share their ideas and enthusiasm as they become stronger writers! However, for many reasons, students may benefit from 1:1 instruction or support. Students of all levels of writing proficiency can grow through individualized attention to their work and their writing process. It’s also valuable for students to understand that revision is often an integral–and even enjoyable–part of writing!
My aim is for students to become proficient and confident writers who are able to produce any form of polished writing required–from book reviews or opinion pieces to essays or research papers. Many young writers with enthusiasm for creative writing feel lost–and therefore unmotivated–when faced with more structured assignments; other students may have decided from previous experience that expository writing is “boring” or formulaic, or don’t know where to begin when given a broad topic. Together we can harness student interests to widen their writing repertoire and explore strategies and organizational tools that work best for each student.
Tutoring sessions will follow a personalized plan designed with input from student and parent. Students may begin with a specific identified need, project, or area for improvement, or seek to build general skills for clear, organized, and focused writing.
