    Have you ever wondered how history compares from one place to another, or one group of people to another, or from one person to another? Do you enjoy thinking about different perspectives, especially as they pertain to history? If so, come join us on a journey of discovery as we travel around the world through history!

    This course gives you the opportunity to consider viewpoints and perspectives as we explore artifacts and primary sources that have shaped our world.

    In this first course of the Comparative History Series, we will focus on artifacts and primary sources from prehistoric times through the year 1100! Although people were not as connected in the same way we are today, we will investigate the similarities of the people living near and far.

    Join us for a thought-provoking look at elements from the past, where you’ll learn how to hone your analytical and critical thinking skills to add excitement to your historical exploration.

    Get ready to travel through time to explore what we know (and what we don’t know) about what happened in the past!

    Note to Parents: 

    So often I see students ill-equipped to navigate through history classes. They are focused only on the facts and events that happened in the past and do not consider different perspectives and ways of thinking. In my Comparative History Series, we will help students bridge the gap between students being spoon-fed history to researching history independently.  By exploring history in this way, students will be better equipped to understand and analyze the world around them–even beyond studying history itself.

    • The Comparative History Series courses may be taken in any order.
    • The Comparative History Series course is presented from a secular standpoint. We only discuss religion as it relates to history (e.g. how leaders, like the pharaohs, will use it to solidify their positions).

    What to expect in the Required section in the classroom each week:

    • Respond to 1-2 forum prompts — writing at least one five-sentence paragraph for each.
    • Engage in weekly exploration.
    • Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ posts in the classroom forums.

    What to expect in the Highly Suggested & Optional sections in the classroom each week:

    • Curated resources, including websites & videos, are provided to excite learners and to add depth to the subject matter.
    • We feature frequent projects and Minecraft™ activities for collaborative or solo expression.

    What to expect during the weekly webinar:

    • Weekly webinars are 50 minutes long. Webinars are recorded and are available for students with schedule conflicts.
    • Primary instruction and guided discussions are provided during live webinars.
    • Active Participation (via the microphone and chat) in online class discussions.

    What to Expect During the Semester:

    • Optional: The opportunity to explore history and present what they learn to our class. Parental assistance for this option is required.
    • Optional: Semester-long term paper. Parental assistance for this option is required.

    Before taking this course, students should be able to: 

    • Read at a strong 6th-grade level or above.
    • Write a paragraph independently.

    Students should be willing to:

    • Actively participate (via the microphone) in the class discussion.
    • Encourage class discussion by adding their questions/ideas in the chat window during the webinar.
    • Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ posts in the classroom forums.

    To get the most out of this course, students should be able and willing to:

    • Possess the skills and desire needed to explore historical information.
    • Think deeply and share their thoughts in a positive and respectful way.
