The Hunger Games meets All Over the Map
By Gabe M., Athena’s Student
Gabe is taking All Over the Map: A Cartographic & Geographic Odyssey with Dr. Kirsten and would like to share this creative project!
Gabe says, “If you have read the Hunger Games series, then I feel this project might appeal to you. I scoured the books for information and used modern data to map the entirety of the nation Panem from the Hunger Games series. I made it into a website, and have a map, and collapsible groups to explain why the districts are where they are on the map. I hope you look at it and learn something!”
Check out part of Gabe’s project below. Amazing Work, Gabe!
- District 1 – District 1 is a district for luxury items. I put it where it is because of modern deposits of luxury metals that would be used to make jewelry.
- District 2 – District 2 mines stone from mountains. When Gale goes there in Mockingjay, it is revealed that peacekeepers ( Panems military/police ) are trained there, so it could also serve as the last line of defense for the capital in case of another revolution.
- District 3 – Not much is known about district 3, but we know it is related to technology. I decided to put it close to the power plant district (5).
- District 4 – District 4 is fishing. I put it on the east coast because in Hunger Games book, the district 7 tributes describe their jobs on the WEST coast.
- District 5 – District 5 is power. It has to be close to 12, which mines coal, because even after enduring global warming so sever that the coasts sunk, they are still using coal power.
- District 6 – District 6 is in the modern Michigan area because of the modern automotive industry there. District 6 is transport.
- District 7 – District 7, being lumber, is on the west coast because of the redwood forests, also, as explained earlier, in the books, they say it is there.
- District 8 – District 8 makes textiles, so it makes sense for it to be close to the place where cotton is grown.
- District 9 – District 9 is in the Midwest, where I live because every time we are driving and I look out my window, all I see are fields and fields of corn, wheat, and soybeans. This would indicate that there is already infrastructure to support a farming lifestyle.
- District 10 – District 10 does livestock and is in the modern day ranching region.
- District 11 – District 11 is placed in the south, where cotton is grown today.
- District 12 – On the map, District 12 is located above a coal deposit ranging from Kentucky to Ohio. In that area, there are already mines. These mines would be extremely old at this point, leading to the collapses that seem rather common. In Mockingjay, Katniss considers running away from District 13 and going back to 12. This would probably mean that 13 is a short distance away from 12. It also needs to be close to 5, the power district, so they don’t have to transport the coal.
- District 13 – District 13 is for nuclear power and weapons. Most evidence points to it being isolated, in the top right of the US. The closest district is the slums of District 12, where most people aren’t insane enough to go out into the wilds and walk for miles and miles, so District 13 is unlikely to be discovered.
- Capital – In the books, the capital is described as having mountains and a glistening lake. The positioning and descriptions of the climate lead me to believe that the capital is near the salt lake.
