Imagine traveling back in time to 79 A.D. There, you stop to gaze at this newspaper about the current events of the day. Of course, the language is probably not one that you are completely familiar with, but you do your best to translate. (Where is Google translate when you need it?!)
You begin to wonder about the authors of this newspaper–because, of course, it is important to know your source! And you discover a letter explaining how the newspaper was written.
Here’s what the letter says:
Hello, Athena’s students!
This newspaper was written by Prof. Lauren’s Latin and Greek News Department Class. Everyone who wrote this has about 1 to 2 semesters of Latin/Greek under their belt, which isn’t much, so this newspaper is a huge accomplishment!
It’s completely written in Latin and Greek about the eruption at Pompeii in 79 AD. It also has ads, comics, sports, and weather reports!

I can’t even tell you how very, very proud I am of this class! They produced something above and beyond my wildest dreams. I was so impressed with all of them! It was amazing! I saw several students not only practicing what they already knew, but also really reaching toward different concepts that hadn’t dealt with before, too. It was very exciting! Awesome job, News Department! 🙂
