NEW Course! “This high school course will help students understand all of earth’s systems and the demands that humans place on these systems. The course covers the interactions of earth’s biological, physical and chemical natural components and the human impact on these components. The course also delves into how modern society can stress these natural systems and the ways that environmental scientists monitor these stresses. ” ~ Dr. Cristen

Environmental Science is a year-long high school class that examines the demands that humans put on Earth’s natural systems. This course covers the basis of earth’s systems, population dynamics, water and land management, energy science and so much more.

We will not only learn the science behind these topics, but how the human population stresses these systems as well as the solutions that environmental scientists are proposing for sustainability.

What to expect in the Required section in the classroom each week:

    • Weekly textbook and pertinent online articles will be assigned. This will be a “flipped” classroom with students reading the material before the webinar. This allows a more in-depth discussion and allows students to bring questions to class.
    • Weekly discussion questions and research will be assigned.

What to expect in the Highly Suggested & Optional sections in the classroom each week:

    • Curated resources, including websites & videos, are provided to excite learners and to add depth to the subject matter.

What to expect during the weekly webinar:

    • Weekly webinars are 50 minutes long. Webinars are recorded and are available for students with schedule conflicts.
    • Students are expected to come to the webinar having done the weekly reading. This will allow for in-depth and engaging discussions.

Before taking this course, students should be able to:

    • Have completed Algebra 1 and have a firm understanding of decimals, percents, and converting units. For example, how to convert milligrams to grams, etc.
    • Prior high school Biology and Chemistry classes are encouraged but not required. However, a high school level understanding of basic science is needed.
    • Read comfortably at a ninth grade level and be able to research and write paragraphs based on research independently.

    Students should be willing to:

    • Be prepared for the webinar.
    • Actively participate (via the microphone and chat) in the class discussion.
    • Respond with positive and encouraging comments on their classmates’ posts in the classroom forums.
